Gyrophoric acid is a lichen acid that is found in the genus Gyrophora. It has been shown to have antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties, which may be due to its ability to donate an anion radical. The biological effects of this compound have not yet been fully characterized, but it has been used as a model system for the study of cell factors. Gyrophoric acid is soluble in water and has been shown to be effective in treating wastewater and other organic solvents. This compound also has a positive effect on the mitochondrial membrane potential of cells.
