2-Hydroxy-7-methylquinoline-3-carbaldehyde is an imine with antibacterial activity. This compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in a biological screening. It also inhibits the growth of S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and E. coli isolates resistant to methicillin, penicillin, oxacillin, and erythromycin. 2-Hydoxy-7-methylquinoline-3-carbaldehyde is able to bind metal ions such as copper(II) or silver(I) by chelation with its carbonyl group and nitrogen atom in the imine moiety. 2HQLA also has coordination properties that can be used as a biocide or disinfectant.
