2-Hydroxypentanenitrile is an organic compound that can be synthesized from hydrogen cyanide and chloride gas. It is used as a precursor to other chemical compounds, including pharmaceuticals and pesticides. The synthesis of 2-hydroxypentanenitrile starts with the reaction of hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen chloride in an alcohol solvent to form a chloroformate. This chloroformate reacts with a catalytic amount of sodium metal to produce the nitrile. Neutralization with hydrochloric acid produces 2-hydroxypentanenitrile.
