Heptane-2,6-dione is a diketone that is used in chemical analysis. It is a diagnostic marker for the detection of fatty acids. The sensitivity of heptane-2,6-dione to detect fatty acids is much higher than that of other diketones. Heptane-2,6-dione can be used for the determination of molecular weight and identification of unknown compounds in cell culture samples. Heptane-2,6-dione can also be used as an indicator of sample preparation procedures.
The potential use for heptane-2,6-dione includes its ability to detect human urine containing amines such as cadaverine and putrescine. It has been detected in urine samples from patients with metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus or urolithiasis (kidney stones).
