- Proline, 4-hydroxy-, methyl ester (9CI)
4-Hydroxyproline methyl ester is an organic compound that is the methyl ester of 4-hydroxyproline. It has been used in the synthesis of antitumor antibiotics and as a reactant in the production of sulfonamides. 4-Hydroxyproline methyl ester was synthesized by reacting methylamine with anhydrous hydrogen chloride, followed by reaction with trimethylsulfonium iodide. This compound can be obtained from a number of animal sources, including calf thymus, bovine liver, and bovine adrenal glands. The reaction solution can be separated into two phases: an organic phase and an aqueous phase. The organic phase contains the desired product and can be extracted with methanol or ether to obtain high yield.
