- 3-Hydroxynevirapine
Nevirapine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor that is metabolized by glucuronidation in the liver. 3-Hydroxy nevirapine is a major metabolite of nevirapine and can be used as an analytical marker for nevirapine in plasma samples. Nevirapine inhibits the cytochrome P450 system and can lead to hepatic impairment, which may be due to its ability to inhibit CYP3A4 and CYP2D6. Additionally, 3-hydroxynevirapine has been shown to have antiretroviral activity against HIV infection. The drug is used for the treatment of HIV infection in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Nevirapine's effectiveness in treating HIV may be due to its ability to inhibit viral protein synthesis and its strong affinity for nucleic acid sequences.
