N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine-N,N′,N′-triacetic acid is a weak organic acid that forms a complex with hydrogen fluoride in solution. It has been used as a detergent additive to improve the cleaning performance of hard surfaces. N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine-N,N′,N′-triacetic acid can also be used as an antiviral agent against influenza virus and brain functions. N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine-N,N′,N′-triacetic acid is not active against bacteria or fungi. The molecule contains one hydroxyl group and two ethylene diamines linked by an amide bond. It has been shown to exhibit synergistic interactions with cationic surfactants such as dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB).
