1-Heptadecyl bromide is a pyridinium salt that has a hydroxyl group on one side of the molecule. It has been shown to exhibit amphipathic properties with an ability to form micelles in solution. The reaction vessel and reaction temperature can be altered to control the amount of monomers that are polymerized. 1-Heptadecyl bromide is used as a radiation sensitizer, which converts ultraviolet light into visible light. This chemical may also be used as a polymerization initiator for polyvinyl chloride and other organic compounds. 1-Heptadecyl bromide has been shown to have cancer-fighting properties, although it may also cause cancer in animals through its interaction with DNA.
