5-Hydroxy Vioxx is a glucuronide conjugate of the drug, vioxx. It is an ester hydrochloride that has a half-life of about 12 hours, which is longer than the parent drug. The 5-hydroxy metabolite has been shown to be present in human liver and other tissues after administration of the parent drug and it has been found to be produced by animals. There are no significant data on its safety in humans. In animal studies, 5-hydoxy Vioxx was not carcinogenic, but there are no long-term studies on its effects on cancer resistance.
