1-Hydroxypyrene is a metabolite that is excreted in the urine and can be used as an analytical marker for exposure to pyrene. 1-Hydroxypyrene is formed when the body reacts with s-phenylmercapturic acid, which is a metabolite of pyrene. The metabolism of 1-hydroxypyrene has been found to be synchronous with fluorescence. It has been shown to inhibit DNA polymerase, RNA polymerase, and protein synthesis in vitro. It also inhibits mitochondrial dehydrogenases, which leads to a decrease in cellular energy production. In addition, 1-hydroxypyrene can act as a fluorescent probe for detecting other metabolites (e.g., creatinine).
