Hydrastinine HCl is a drug that inhibits the secretion of gastric acid in the stomach, which can be used to treat inflammatory bowel disease. Hydrastinine HCl binds to the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the parietal cells of the stomach and causes an irreversible inhibition of these receptors. This leads to a decrease in gastric acid production and relief from symptoms. Hydrastinine HCl has been shown to be an effective treatment for patients with severe refractory cases of chronic, severe ulcerative colitis. It has also been shown to have beneficial effects on cardiac function and toxicity studies in rats.
