2-Hydroxy-5-hydroxymethylpyridine is a fluorine-containing insecticide that inhibits the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. It is used commercially as an insecticide to control insects such as aphids, thrips, and whiteflies. 2-Hydroxy-5-hydroxymethylpyridine binds to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and prevents the production of acetylcholine, which is needed for normal nerve function. This chemical has been shown to be an optimal modulator of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in subgroups of insects.br>br>2-Hydroxy-5-hydroxymethylpyridine belongs to the neonicotinoid class of insecticides and has been shown to have low toxicity in mammals when used at appropriate doses.
