HDMA is a cross-linking agent that has been shown to have properties similar to those of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT). HDMA has been used as a treatment for inflammatory diseases, such as atrial fibrillation. It binds to the 5-HT4 receptor and modifies the electrophysiological properties of cardiac tissue. This compound also reduces collagen synthesis in the lungs and prevents expiratory flow. HDMA is known to be an antigen and can be used as a marker for DNA methylation.
