Heptamethyltrisiloxane is a chemical compound that contains six methyl groups bound to three silicon atoms. It is a liquid with a boiling point of 176 °C and has been used as an additive in cosmetics, shampoos, hair conditioners, soaps, detergents, and lubricants. It is also used as a solvent for paints and varnishes. Heptamethyltrisiloxane can be synthesized by the reaction of hexamethyldisiloxane with carbon dioxide at high pressure or by the reaction of hexamethyldisiloxane with sodium carbonate at room temperature. The synthesis reaction mechanism has not been fully elucidated but it is thought to involve the formation of methylsilanol intermediates that react with carbon dioxide to form heptamethyltrisiloxane. The toxicity studies have shown that heptamethyltrisiloxane poses no significant risk to humans or animals.
