(2R,5R)-2,5-Hexanediol is a chiral diol. It has been synthesized by utilizing the kinetic resolution technique to produce the (2S,5S) and (2R,5R) enantiomers from racemic 2,5-hexanediol. The original method for producing this compound was an asymmetric synthesis that utilized a dehydrogenase enzyme to reduce the carbonyl groups of acetaldehyde to form the corresponding aldehyde. A more efficient method involves the reduction process with sodium borohydride in high concentrations. This reaction is thermodynamically favored because of its lower free energy change than other processes that would produce this compound. The active site on alcohol dehydrogenase needed for this reaction is located at the surface of the protein. Biotransformations are also possible pathways for synthesizing this product.
