1-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-2-nitropropene is a chemical used as an optical reagent. It can be found in soil samples, where it is racemized by microbial activity. 1-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-2-nitropropene has been used to study the rate of racemization and to determine the hydrogenation rate of microorganisms. 1-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-2-nitropropene has also been used to measure the concentration of acidity in culture media for actinomycetes and rhodococcus cultures.
