(R)-2-Hydroxybutyric acid is the product of a multienzyme synthetase that contains three different enzyme activities, including an aminoacylase, an amide synthase, and a cyclopentenone reductase. The synthesis of (R)-2-hydroxybutyric acid can be achieved in vitro by using a strategy based on the use of a multifunctional enzyme. This molecule has been shown to be biodegradable and to have potential for industrial applications in the production of pharmaceuticals or other chemicals. In addition, this molecule has been shown to inhibit dehalogenases from bacteria such as Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli, which may make it useful for treating infections caused by these bacteria.
