Hemorphin-7 is a synthetic opioid peptide that has been shown to have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. The peptide was developed as an active analogue of the endogenous opioid hemorphin, which inhibits neutrophil chemotaxis and degranulation. Hemorphin-7 selectively binds to the opioid receptor in bowel cells, leading to reduced inflammation and decreased motility. In preclinical studies, hemorphin-7 has also shown therapeutic potential for autoimmune diseases, as well as diabetes. Animal studies have shown that hemorphin-7 is taken up by cells more efficiently than other opioids, due to its disulfide bond.
