- Guanidinobiotin
2-Iminobiotin is a reactive molecule that has been used as an experimental model for the study of protein synthesis, energy metabolism, and neuroprotection. The binding of 2-Iminobiotin to streptavidin has been shown to inhibit GABA-induced currents in rat brain cells. This compound also has a neuroprotective effect on neurons by inhibiting glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. 2-Iminobiotin has also been found to have a high affinity for human serum albumin, which may be due to its hydrogen bond formation with the NH group of Serine residues on the protein.
2-Iminobiotin binds to specific receptors in the central nervous system and blocks the binding of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) or glutamate to their receptors. This results in increased levels of GABA and decreased levels of glutamate, leading to neuroprotection.
