Pityriacitrin is a natural compound that is structurally related to indole-3-glyoxylyl chloride. The primary effect of pityriacitrin is to inhibit the binding of ligands to benzodiazepine receptors, which are the 5-HT2 type. It also inhibits glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3), a protein kinase that regulates glycogen synthesis and glucose metabolism. Pityriacitrin has been shown to have anticancer effects through inhibition of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in human cancer cells, and has been shown to produce an increase in locomotor activity in mice.
