Iberin is a natural product that has potent antibacterial activity. Iberin has been shown to have potent inducers of detoxification enzymes, such as glutathione-S-transferase and quinone reductase. Iberin also inhibits the growth of prostate cancer cells and inhibits the production of inflammatory mediators, such as prostaglandins. Iberin binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. Iberin also has an inhibitory effect on oral pathogens and HIV infection.
