5-Iodo-1-methyl-1H-imidazole is a synthetic drug that is also a natural product. It was first isolated from the sponge Xestospongia and later synthesized by the alkylation of benzene with 1,2,4-trimethoxybenzene in the presence of sodium iodide. 5-Iodo-1-methyl-1H-imidazole has been shown to have antileishmanial activity in mice and is not cytotoxic to human cells. This compound is also an active drug that binds to DNA and inhibits RNA synthesis, which may be due to its ability to bind to imidazoles or dioxan.
