- Racemic ibuprofen methyl ester
Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that belongs to the class of propionic acid derivatives. It is used in the treatment of pain, fever, and inflammation. Ibuprofen inhibits lipoprotein lipase and prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX), which has been shown to be responsible for these effects. Ibuprofen methyl ester is hydrolyzed in vivo to ibuprofen, its active form. The compound's stability (i.e., chemical resistance) makes it suitable for use as an extraction solvent in solid phase microextraction experiments with hydroxy groups on organic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
