2-(Isopropylamino)ethanol (2-IPA) is a fatty acid analog that is used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. 2-IPA is an inhibitor of protein synthesis and may be used to regulate the production of proteins necessary for hair growth. It also has a carbonic anhydrase inhibitory effect, which may be useful for treating alopecia areata. 2-IPA inhibits the activity of rat liver microsomes by binding to the hydroxyl group on cysteine residues that are involved in hydrogen bonding with amines. The uptake of 2-IPA into cells can be inhibited by amines such as ethanolamine, methylamine, and benzylamine.
