Isometamidium is a drug that belongs to the class of tricyclic aminomethyl compounds. It is an inhibitor of mitochondrial ATP synthesis and has been shown to have antimalarial activity in vitro. Isometamidium inhibits the surface glycoprotein on the outside of the trypanosome, which prevents its invasion into red blood cells. Isometamidium also inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential and DNA synthesis, leading to cell death. The uptake mechanism for this compound is not known, but it may be similar to other drugs that are taken up by monoclonal antibodies on the surface of cells.
