Isometamedium chloride HCl is a drug that has been shown to be effective against trypanosoma and other infectious diseases in vitro. It is used as an immunomodulator, and it has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of cells by binding to nuclear DNA. Isometamidium also binds to mitochondrial membrane potential and chloride channels, which may be responsible for its anticonvulsant activity. This drug is not active in vivo, so it is not recommended for treatment of human infections. Isometamidium chloride HCl can be used in tissue culture as a substitute for dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO).
