IR-813 is a pegylated perchlorate that is used for environmental research. IR-813 has been shown to efficiently transfer energy from the near infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum to a fluorescent molecule. This process can be visualized using optical imaging or fluorescence microscopy. The fluorescence lifetime of IR-813 is long and it has colloidal stability in water, which allows for its use as a nanoprobe for optical imaging regimes. IR-813 is also sensitive to the wavelength of light and can be used as an optical probe for measuring cell proliferation, migration, and apoptosis.
