6-Keto ethynyl estradiol (EE2) is a synthetic hormone that has been found to be an effective contraceptive. EE2 binds to the estrogen receptors in the body and inhibits ovulation, which prevents pregnancy. EE2 also inhibits the production of gonadotropins from the pituitary gland, which prevents follicle maturation and ovulation. The chemical nature of EE2 makes it difficult to measure its concentrations in blood, serum, or urine. However, there are a number of immunoassays that can detect this drug and other synthetic hormones. 6-Keto ethynyl estradiol has been shown to have a significant effect on population studies due to its ability to block ovulation in healthy women.
