Kakkalide is a bioactive compound that is extracted from the acetate extract of kakkali (Irisolidone) and has been shown to have DNA binding activity. Kakkalide has also been shown to inhibit the enzyme activities of nucleotide diphosphatase, phosphodiesterase, and malate dehydrogenase. The myocardial infarct model in rats has demonstrated that this compound can protect against Ca2+ overload and mitochondrial membrane potential depletion. Kakkalide has also been shown to have strong anti-inflammatory properties and can be used as a hepatoprotective agent.
