Lafutidine is a histamine H2-receptor antagonist that blocks the histamine-stimulated gastric acid secretion. This drug has been shown to inhibit the release of prostaglandin E2 in vitro, and has been shown to reduce gastric damage in vivo. Lafutidine is also an effective anti-ulcer agent that works by blocking the action of histamine on the nerves of the stomach, which stimulates acid production. It can be used for short-term treatment of peptic ulcers, including those caused by NSAIDs or viral infections such as Helicobacter pylori. It is also used for treating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
