Lovastatin is an organic compound that is used as a medication to lower blood cholesterol levels. It is a member of the statin class of drugs, which work by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase (a rate-limiting enzyme in the production of cholesterol). Lovastatin is a white crystalline solid that has impurities such as chloride and pravastatin. It is prepared by ring-opening of the corresponding lactone followed by chlorination with phosphorus pentachloride and subsequent hydrolysis. The hydrochloric acid reacts with the inorganic chlorine to form hydrochloric acid, which then reacts with the acidic ph to form hydrogen chloride gas. This hydrogen chloride gas then reacts with water to form hydrochloric acid again. This process can be repeated until all of the lovastatin has been converted to its salt form. Lovastatin dimer is formed when lovastatin interacts with radiation or hydroxyl groups.
