2-lodonitrobenzene (2-LNB) is a nitro compound that was synthesized in the early 1900s. It has been used as a precursor to other compounds, such as dyes and drugs. 2-LNB is an electron donor, which can react with nucleophilic attack to form a covalent bond. This reaction is usually catalyzed by metal surfaces, although it can also be done in the absence of metals with hydroxyl groups or halides. The reaction mechanism is similar to that of nitration reactions, but proceeds through different intermediates. The particle size of 2-LNB is larger than that of most other nitro compounds, making it more effective for use in the synthesis of small molecules.
