A-Methylphenylacetonitrile is a chemical compound that contains a hydroxy group. It can be prepared by the reaction of anhydrous ammonia with nitrobenzene, or by the reaction of acetaldehyde with methyl chloroformate. The enzyme activities of a-methylphenylacetonitrile have been shown to vary depending on the bacterial genus. For example, it inhibits corynebacterium glutamicum, but not Escherichia coli. The kinetic data for this compound has been determined using hydrochloric acid as a catalyst and it is most active at pH 6.5-7.5
