C2-mercaptopyridine-n-oxide sodium salt is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi by binding to copper. The drug binds to copper ions in the bacterial cell wall, which prevents the formation of an electron transfer complex required for energy metabolism. C2-mercaptopyridine-n-oxide sodium salt has been shown to exhibit synergistic effects with zinc pyrithione, a common antifungal agent. This drug also has acute toxicities and toxicity studies have been conducted on rats, mice, and rabbits.
