5-Methoxy-1H-indole-2-carbohydrazide (5MI) is a molecule that has been shown to be an effective antimicrobial agent against cancer cells. 5MI inhibits the growth of cancer cells by binding to the DNA, preventing RNA transcription and translation. It also exhibits dose-dependent activity and can kill cancer cells in the G1 phase of the cell cycle. 5MI has been shown to kill bacteria resistant to other antibiotics due to its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis and protein production. 5MI is not active against Gram-positive bacteria or fungi, but is active against Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enterica, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Proteus mirabilis.
