5-Methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-3-amine is a rearrangement product of 1,2,4-oxadiazole. It has been used extensively in the synthesis of 6-fluoro-3-indoxyl beta-D-galactopyranoside (RIFAPENTINE) and other related compounds. The crystal structure of 5-methyl 1,2,4-oxadiazol 3 amine was determined by xray analysis and the molecular weight was found to be 176.5 g/mol. The compound was obtained by reacting perchloric acid with trifluoromethylated 1,2,4 oxadiazole in the presence of sodium nitrite. The molecule has two regioisomeric forms: one with a methyl group on the ring nitrogen atom and one with a methyl group on the ring oxygen atom.
