3-Methoxy-5-methylbenzoic acid is a methoxysubstituted aromatic compound that contains a methoxy group and methyl group. It has an elemental composition of C8H7O2, molecular weight of 149.17 g/mol, and melting point of 124 °C. 3-Methoxy-5-methylbenzoic acid can be found in nature as a natural product or can be synthesized by the reaction of formaldehyde with benzyl chloride. The compound was first described in 1879 by A. von Richter and his student H. Kohnert in their paper "Über die Constitution der Methylphenoläther" (On the Constitution of Methoxymethyl Ethers).
3-Methoxy-5-methylbenzoic acid is used as a chromatographic stationary phase for gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, and high performance liquid chromatography. It is also used as an affinity
