Methyl pyrazine-2-carboximidoate is an anti-tuberculosis drug that belongs to the class of carboximidamides. It has shown tuberculostatic activity in a number of animal models, including guinea pigs and rats infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Methyl pyrazine-2-carboximidoate binds to the mycobacterial cell membrane, resulting in increased permeability and leakage of intracellular material. The drug also has a beneficial effect on the nervous system, as it inhibits imidazoline receptors.
Methyl pyrazine-2-carboximidoate is synthesized from methyl pyrazine-2-carboxylate and 2-(1H)-aminopyridine hydrochloride (1). The carboxylic acid group is converted to an amide by reaction with ammonia in methanol. This amide can be alkylated using methyl iodide
