1-(4-Methylbenzyl)-1H-indole-2,3-dione is a benzyl derivative that has been shown to have cytotoxic and anti-cancer properties. It inhibits the growth of cancer cells by binding to the chloride ion channel on the surface of the cell, which prevents chloride ions from entering and depolarizing the cell membrane. This drug also inhibits tumor angiogenesis by inhibiting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) production. 1-(4-Methylbenzyl)-1H-indole-2,3-dione has been shown to be effective against renal cell cancer and lung cancer cells in vitro. In addition, this compound has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of ovarian cancer cells.
