5-Methoxyisoxazol-3-amine is an organic compound that belongs to the class of isothiocyanates. It is a target compound for the synthesis of other compounds with antimicrobial properties. 5-Methoxyisoxazol-3-amine has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth by binding to the enzyme methionine synthase, which catalyzes the conversion of methionine into homocysteine. It also inhibits DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA, as well as RNA polymerase, which is required for protein synthesis in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. 5-Methoxyisoxazol-3-amine has been clinically used in combination with propionitrile (an antibiotic) for treatment of infections caused by bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex.
