2-Methyl-6-nitrobenzoic anhydride is a macrocyclic compound that has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of acid formation in human serum. It has been used as an analytical method for determining picolinic acid levels in human blood, and has been shown to have locomotor activity in mice. In addition, 2-methyl-6-nitrobenzoic anhydride has been shown to be neuroprotective against ischemic brain damage in rats. This compound is used as a model system for studying the neurotoxicity of polynucleotides.
2-Methyl-6-nitrobenzoic anhydride can be prepared by condensing nitrous acid with methyl benzoate, followed by the oxidation of the resulting product with potassium permanganate or oxalyl chloride.
