Methyl 3-trimethylsilylpent-4-enoate is a polymeric compound that is soluble in benzene, but insoluble in other common solvents. It has been used to synthesize ammonium benzene sulfonates, which are used as a catalyst for the oxidation of hydrocarbons. This compound can also be used in the synthesis of dodecylbenzenesulfonate and persulfates. Methyl 3-trimethylsilylpent-4-enoate is also used to produce dimers, trimers, and tetramers of acrylate. Dodecylbenzenesulfonate is an inhibitor of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) replication.
