3-Methyl-5-nitro-1H-indazole is a nitro compound that is used as an efficient and inexpensive reagent for the deprotonation of arylhydrazones. It has been shown to provide high yields in syntheses of a variety of compounds, including fluorinating agents, cyclization reagents, and other synthetic intermediates. 3-Methyl-5-nitro-1H-indazole is also useful for modification of nucleophilic groups such as amines, hydrazines, and alcohols. This compound can be prepared by reacting acetophenone with fluorine in the presence of acid or base catalysis.
