5-Methoxypicolinic acid is a metabolite of phenolphthalein. It is an organic acid and part of the phenolphthalein pathway. 5-Methoxypicolinic acid is a stepwise oxidation product that has been shown to be pharmacologically active in the treatment of hypertension. This compound also has been shown to inhibit the growth of certain types of bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, by acting as an aliphatic aldehyde and binding to their DNA. 5-Methoxypicolinic acid has also been used as an analytical reagent for the detection of carbohydrates by its reaction with p-nitrophenol hydrazine (PNPH) and sodium nitrite.
