2-Methyl-5-nitrobenzenesulfonamide is a synthetic nitrosated hydroxamic acid that inhibits the histone deacetylase enzyme. This leads to an increase in gene transcription and protein synthesis. 2-Methyl-5-nitrobenzenesulfonamide has been shown to be highly potent against various cancer cell lines, including breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers. It is also used as a lead compound in the development of pazopanib, which is a drug for the treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma. Pazopanib is metabolized by CYP3A4 enzymes to form 2-methyl-5-nitrobenzenesulfonamide. The impurities found in this drug are not toxic and do not contribute to its antitumor activity.
