6-Methyl-2-mercaptobenzothiazole is a glycol ether that has been shown to be an effective corrosion inhibitor. It interacts with the sulfide ion, forming a complex that is soluble in water and does not react with carbon disulfide. The potentials of 6-methyl-2-mercaptobenzothiazole are constant, indicating no change in oxidation state. This chemical is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as propylene glycol. In addition, 6-methyl-2-mercaptobenzothiazole has a low viscosity and can be used as a monomer or polymerization agent for polyurethanes.
6-Methyl-2-mercaptobenzothiazole can be synthesized by reacting ethylbenzene with hydrogen sulfide gas at high temperature and pressure.
