5-Methoxy-N-methyl-2-nitrobenzenamine is a vitamin B12 analog that has been shown to be an effective ligand for the mammalian retinoid X receptor. This compound is a functional analogue of vitamin B12, and it can bind to the nuclear receptor in the same way that vitamin B12 binds. 5-Methoxy-N-methyl-2-nitrobenzenamine has been shown to induce target genes such as those involved in DNA repair, cell cycle regulation and apoptosis in mammalian cells. The compound also inhibits steroidal hormone synthesis by inducing transcriptional changes in cytochrome P450scc, which lead to decreased production of progesterone, testosterone and estradiol. It also has been found to inhibit the development of larvae in C. elegans. 5-Methoxy-N-methyl-2-nitrobenzenamine may be useful for treating diseases related to steroidal hormone synthesis or DNA damage
