5-Methoxyisatoic anhydride is a flavonoid that has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The mechanism of action for this compound is through the nucleophilic attack on the bacterial cell wall, which results in the formation of 5-methoxyisatoic acid. This compound also has antimicrobial properties and can be used to inhibit the growth of bacteria that are resistant to other substances. 5-Methoxyisatoic anhydride is produced industrially by reacting dimethylamine with methoxyphenol chloride in the presence of hydrochloric acid. 5-Methoxyisatoic anhydride is used as an intermediate in the production of penicillin and other pharmaceuticals. It can also be used as a natural flavoring agent in foods and beverages.
