- Magnesium chloride (MgCl2), monohydrate
Magnesium chloride is the inorganic compound with the chemical formula MgCl2. It is a white crystalline powder, with a strong saline taste. Magnesium chloride is used to treat bowel disease and other autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. It is also used in the treatment of magnesium deficiency. This compound has been shown to be effective in reducing inflammation by inhibiting neutrophil migration and decreasing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. Magnesium chloride monohydrate is an ionic salt consisting of two ions: one magnesium ion and one chlorine ion. The magnesium ion has a charge of 2+ while the chlorine ion has a charge of 1-. The monohydrate form consists of three molecules of water per molecule of magnesium chloride.
