Methyl dimethyldithiocarbamate is a solvent with a high boiling point and low volatility. It is used in analytical chemistry as an extractant for metals, such as sodium. It has shown to have cytotoxic effects on mammalian cells and insect larvae, which are thought to be due to its ability to form sulfines through chemical ionization. Methyl dimethyldithiocarbamate has also been shown to inhibit the tyrosine kinase enzyme in cancer cells by forming a covalent bond with the sulfhydryl group of cysteine residues and preventing phosphorylation of tyrosine residues.
